What is IFS?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a transformative, evidence-based approach to understanding our inner world. It’s built on a compassionate premise: we all have an inner system made up of various “parts,” much like a family. These parts are not symptoms of a disorder; instead, they are valuable aspects of our personality, each with positive intentions, even if their actions sometimes lead to challenges.

Think of it this way:

  • You are not just one thing. You are a rich tapestry of different thoughts, feelings, memories, and beliefs – each with its own perspective and role.
  • Every part has a purpose. Even the parts that seem difficult or destructive are trying to protect you or help you in some way, often carrying burdens from past experiences.
  • At your core, you have a wise and compassionate “Self.” This Self is your true essence, always present and capable of leading your internal system with clarity, calm, courage, and compassion.

The Goal of IFS:

IFS isn’t about getting rid of “bad” parts. Instead, it’s about building a compassionate relationship with all your parts, understanding their stories, and helping them release the burdens they carry. When your authentic Self can lead, your entire internal system becomes more harmonious, allowing you to live with greater freedom, joy, and purpose.

How it works (and how it feels):

In an IFS session, we create a safe space for you to explore your inner landscape. You’ll learn to identify and connect with these different parts, listen to what they need, and help them transform from extreme roles into valuable allies. It’s a journey of self-discovery, healing, and profound self-compassion.
